A cataract is an opacity that develops in the eye’s natural lens. Often, cataracts are caused by proteins that build up in the lens as we age. However, cataracts can also be caused by trauma, medications, and other factors. When left untreated, cataracts can drastically diminish vision and even result in blindness. Fortunately, through cataract surgery with our experienced surgeon serving Chicago, Lake Forest, Highland Park, and other areas, the clouded natural lens can be replaced with an artificial lens to restore clear, crisp vision.
Individuals who have diminished vision due to cataracts may benefit from cataract surgery at our Chicago practice. During the procedure, which is typically performed under local anesthesia, a small incision is created to allow removal of the eye’s clouded, natural lens. The lens is removed through a process called phacoemulsification, in which ultrasound technology is used to break apart the lens so that it can be suctioned out. The natural lens is then replaced with an intraocular lens, such as ReZoom™, AcrySof® ReSTOR®, or Toric, depending on the patient’s individual needs. These artificial lenses not only replace the clouded lens, but can be matched to your prescription to help you achieve clear vision without the need for glasses or contacts. The entire cataract surgery procedure with our surgeon serving Chicago, Lake Forest, Highland Park, and surrounding areas, lasts about an hour.
Patients may experience mild discomfort following the procedure in addition to redness around the eyes, but this will only last a few days. Eye drops will be prescribed in order to protect the treated eye from infection, and a protective shield will be provided for wear at night to prevent complications that could arise from bumping or scratching the eye. The results of cataract surgery at our Chicago practice will become apparent within the first week after the procedure, and most patients will make a full recovery within two to six weeks.
