The intraocular lens (IOL) implant procedure at our Chicago practice serving Lake Forest, Highland Park, and other areas, is used to replace a natural lens affected by cataracts, or improve vision affected by keratoconus. Through Acrysof® ReSTOR®, ReZoom™, and other IOLs with our leading Chicago eye care professionals, patients are also able to improve focusing ability and reduce dependence on glassed and contact lenses.
A few years ago, IOLs were only available as monofocal lenses, able to correct vision at one distance, whether near, intermediate, or far. However, multifocal lenses are now available to correct a range of vision imperfections. Individuals suffering from presbyopia (age-related farsightedness) often benefit from multifocal lenses.

Intraocular Lens Procedure
ReSTOR® is a multifocal lens. Modeled after microscope and telescope technology that allows viewers to see objects both near and far away, ReSTOR® is an exciting option for patients interested in intraocular lens implants at our Chicago practice serving Lake Forest and Highland Park, among other areas. ReSTOR® patients can smoothly transition between near and distance vision without the use of glasses or contact lenses. This is achieve in much the same way as bifocal lenses, where two prescriptions (one for near vision and one for distance vision) are combined to allow individuals to see both near and far objects.
ReZoom™ IOLs are a good option for patients with cataracts, and those suffering from severe presbyopia, a condition that progresses with age and causes diminished near vision. ReZoom™ has multiple focal points throughout the lens, allowing individuals to see better at almost any distance. This variability makes ReZoom™ a popular option at our practice serving Lake Forest, Highland Park, and the entire Chicago area, and one of the more commonly-prescribed IOLs on the market.
AcrySof® Toric IOLs are artificial lenses which are ideal for individuals who have cataracts and also suffer from astigmatism. Astigmatism is caused by an irregularly shaped cornea, or in the case of lenticular astigmatism, an irregularly shaped lens, that results in blurred vision. Since the Toric IOL is convex on both sides, it allows for the correction of both these types of astigmatism. Before the Toric IOL, cataract patients with astigmatism would often undergo another procedure, called astigmatic keratotomy (AK), which involved creating incisions in the cornea to adjust the corneal shape. However, the Toric lens provides an alternative to AK, without the need for additional incisions. If you suffer from cataracts and astigmatism, contact our Chicago practice to see if the Toric IOL procedure is for you.
IOLs are used to replace a lens during cataract surgery. The damaged lens is typically broken up and removed through a tiny incision during a process called phacoemulsification. Once the damaged lens has been removed, the intraocular lens can be placed through the same incision. Since IOLs are made of a soft plastic material, they can be folded in order to fit through the small, existing incision. Once an intraocular lens is put in place by our experienced Chicago cataract surgeon serving Lake Forest, Highland Park, and other areas, the ReZoom™, ReSTOR®, or other kind of IOL will gently unfold, leaving the patient with a new lens and clear, crisp vision.
