LASIK, which stands for Laser-Assisted in-Situ Keratomileusis, is a refractive surgery procedure that involves reshaping the cornea so that light can focus more clearly on the retina. Patients who suffer from nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), or astigmatism can achieve perfect (20/20) or near-perfect vision through traditional LASIK. At our practice serving Chicago and Lake Forest, Highland Park, and other surrounding areas, Monovision LASIK vision correction can also be performed to treat those suffering from presbyopia. Dr. Sanjay Rao is one of most experienced LASIK surgeons in the Chicago area and has successfully performed over 8,000 refractive surgery procedures. To find out if you are a candidate for LASIK, contact our Chicago practice today to schedule a complimentary LASIK evaluation.
Traditional LASIK surgery can correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism. Before beginning the procedure, Dr. Rao uses anesthetic eye drops to numb the eye so that his patients remain comfortable throughout treatment. He then creates a thin corneal flap using a blade called a microkeratome. Next, he lifts the flap to allow access to the corneal tissue beneath. Using an excimer laser, Dr. Rao reshapes the corneal tissue. After the cornea has been reshaped, the flap is replaced and allowed to heal on its own. The results of the procedure are apparent almost immediately, and patients are generally able to return to their daily activities the very next day after surgery. While complications are rare, patients may experience temporary side effects such as dry eyes, halos, and sensitivity to light following the procedure. If you are considering LASIK vision correction, our Chicago-based staff serving Lake Forest, Highland Park, and other areas in and out of the city, will help you fully understand all aspects of the procedure.
Monovision LASIK corrects one eye for distance and one eye for near vision. This procedure is typically used to treat individuals suffering from presbyopia, age-related farsightedness. Presbyopia is caused by a gradual hardening of the eye’s natural lens, which makes the lens less flexible and unable to adjust to focus on objects up-close. While glasses and contact lenses can be used to treat presbyopia, monovision LASIK at our Chicago practice serving Lake Forest, Highland Park, and other areas, allows individuals to achieve sharp, clear vision at all distances without being dependent upon glasses or contact lenses.
Monovision LASIK is performed the same way as traditional LASIK. Patients generally recover quickly after monovision LASIK and can typically return to their daily activities the very next day. However, some side effects may result from the procedure. Since the eyes usually focus together, patients may experience some problems with depth perception and their peripheral focus may be reduced as well. While most patients are satisfied with the results of the procedure, Dr. Rao often recommends that patients try wearing monovision contact lenses before undergoing monovision LASIK so they have a better idea of what to expect following the procedure and can decide if it is right for them.
